Many crofters emigrated to America especially North Carolina - of their own volition to try to find a better life away from the poverty and unemployment of Jura. They also sought freedom from the yoke of being subservient to a landlord. There is a place called 'Buie's Creek' in North Carolina and there are probable more descendants of "Jurachs" living in the Cape Fear area of North Carolina than anywhere else. There is evidence to suggest that large numbers of people left Jura in 1739,1745 and 1755. It is also known from the colonial records of N.Carolina that a boat left Jura in 1767 and that from it 50 settlers landed in Brunswick on Nov 4th of that year. Yet another ship left with emigrants in 1775. Records also show that several hundred Jura inhabitants left between 1830 and 1840. The potato famine which hit Ireland in the l840's also affected the west of Scotland and it is very likely that many left Jura at this time because of the shortage of food and intense poverty.
